Construction Job Shadowing

In recognition of October being Careers in Construction Month, Sixty-Nine Students from Midlands’ School Districts Participated in a Construction Industry-wide Job Shadowing event held on October 10, 2019.
Midlands Education and Business Alliance and Building Industry Association of Central South Carolina (BIA) coordinated with industry partners to place 69 students in job shadows throughout the construction industry on October 10, 2019.

Students participating in the extended learning opportunity spent the day in either residential or commercial construction to become familiar with a construction pathway of their interest that included project management, superintendent, electrical, HVAC, welding, architecture, painting, framing, construction sales, concrete, construction management, general contracting, interior design, real-estate, mechanical engineering and heavy equipment operation.  Students gained exposure to these careers while learning more about employer expectations, current and future workforce needs, education requirements, career progression and workplace skills needed in the construction industry today and tomorrow.

MEBA and the BIA collaborated with many industry partners to provide this authentic learning experience for students:  84 Lumber, AOS Specialty Arc Steele, Argos, B&L Electric, Building Material and Construction Solutions, Capital Kitchen and Bath, Creative Tile, Ed Venture Children’s Museum, Essex Homes Southeast, Gallup & LaFitte – Design Build, Great Southern Homes, Hood Construction, J.C. Wilkie Construction, J&J Electric, Kehoe Constructors, LLE Construction, Lowery Painting, MB Kahn, McCrory Construction, Meetze Plumbing, Mungo Homes, Spratlin Electric and Walker White Mechanical Contractors.  Instead of going to school, students entered the “world of work” for the day and experienced working in the construction industry first-hand.

The next construction industry day of job shadowing has been scheduled for Tuesday, February 25, 2020.  If your company is interested in hosting a high school student for a day of shadowing, please register using the following link:

“Thank you. I appreciate all you do to help our students and myself.  You allow my students to experience opportunities beyond my reach. You all are invaluable to my program.”
